Bollywood actress Tabu, who took a yearlong break from acting, says actors never retire.
The actress, who uses only one name, said in a report published Monday that Tabu used the break to spend time with family and friends, and to watch movies.
“Once in cinema you can never retire from it,” Tabu was quoted as saying in Bombay’s DNA newspaper. “It’s like a joint family – everyone stays connected.”
The 35-year-old Tabu, who has won several national awards, is considered one of the most talented actresses in Indian cinema.Â Tabu was last seen on the screen playing a writer’s muse in “Meenaxi – Tale of 3 cities.”
Her forthcoming movies include “The Namesake,” which is directed by well-known filmmaker Mira Nair, who also directed ‘Monsoon Wedding” and Salaam Bombay!”.
It is based on an Indian immigrant novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian-born American author Jhumpa Lahiri.
In the film, Tabu plays a woman appearing as a young bride, a mother and then a widow in her adopted country.
Unlike many Indian actresses, Tabu often plays strong character roles and shies away from standard romantic leads.
TabuÂ has acted in more than 50 movies since she entered the movie industry in the early 1990s.
Tabu said actors shouldn’t always conform and should “acknowledge what is unique about you and take pride in it,” according to the DNA interview. “It’s demoralizing for newcomers to be told to dance like this and look like that.”
Tabu is also in a supporting role in “Kandukondain Kandukondain (I Have Found It)” which also features Aishwarya Rai. It’s a Tamil film – south India has quite the developed film industry of their own – so the language is not Hindi, and it has some unique regional film characteristics.
